Marriage, including same sex marriage, requires perseverence: Marriage is like a coconut, you have to crack it to see what is inside

Marriage is the union of two people who decide to make their relationship legal. All my life, marriage has been solely the union between a man and a woman. Those for or against same sex marriage can choose their own definition based on their beliefs. As the Supreme Court is examining same sex marriage cases, the public is divided.

No matter who you are — Adam married to Paula or Adam married to Steve or  Megan married to Mary — being legally married does not mean understanding the perseverance needed for marriage. Those who define marriage between a man and a woman should know that over 50% of marriage in the US end up in divorce. Gays and lesbians are no exception.

Viewing the growing support for same sex marriage in the US, it is likely that the US Supreme Court will overturn California’s Proposition 8. Gays and lesbians should not be naive. Learn from straight people. Marriage is like a lottery. As the Hausa of Nigeria say, “Marriage is like a coconut, you have to crack it to see what is inside.”Gay marriage
