Obama is the President, not Boehner: When the head is present, the knee should not pretend to wear the hat

The battle between the Democrats and Republicans about how to avoid the Fiscal Cliff brings us back to the difficulties of President Obama’s first term. The President had a hard time dealing with the Republican-controlled congress, which chose obstructionism over moving the country forward.

In the past, we heard from leaders who wished for the President’s failure to bring back the US economy, so believing in a bipartisan resolution of this dangerous situation is naive. Eventually, tension will rise as the deadlines near. It is clear that the Majority leader Boehner and his followers are dragging their feet. Any failure to reach an agreement will be the fault of the GOP.

President Obama, who is often perceived as a “nice guy,” should show his political opponents that he is the President of the United States, not an equal to John Boehner. As the Baoule of Ivory Coast say, “When the head is present, the knee should not pretend to wear the hat.”
