Democrats and Republicans have picked their representives to the bipartisan debt committee. The unpopular US congress will have to find a way to show to the American people that they are ready to work together to solve America’s debt problem.

The debt ceiling debate is a national embarassment, especially for a country that is so proud of its democracy. What should we expect from these six Democrats and six Republicans? Seriously? Nothing. The committee eventually will come out with a plan to cut the US deficit, a plan that will not necessarily please everybody. The party of the rich will fight for the rich and the defenders of the middle class will fight for the middle class.

S&P, by courageously downgrading the US credit from AAA to AA, has put a finger in the wound. The response from the US public was a reaction of anger. The truth is that the S&P has helped America in some way to get their heads out of the clouds and see reality in the face.

The American people should turn their anger toward their politicans, not at the S&P. The people of America elect their representatives, despite their reputation of doing nothing. Things move in Washington only when the people are angry. When things cool down, business continues as usual. As the Bete of Ivory Coast say, “When the music stops, a deaf person continues to dance.”
