As human beings get older, we lose our strengh. Despite the loud calls of his people to step dowm, President Hosni Mubarak is still fighting to stay in power. Instead of instantly quitting, he promises that he won’t seek re-election. Reactions are mixed.

As outsiders, the European Union and the US administration are limited in setting the tone in a sovereign country. Yes, Egypt is an important ally for the US, but the will of the Egyptian people has overpowered the US government’s private wish.

President Mubarak’s destiny is in his own hands. He can choose to be blind and deaf and pay the price, or he can step down peacefully. As the Swahili of Tanzania say, “A sinking vessel needs no navigation.”
