Gays in the US military must be delighted with the repeal by lawmakers of “Don’t ask, Don’t tell,” a discriminatory law against gays in the military. It is a good and a bad thing.
In our society, being gay is seen as a mental disorder. Being openly gay in the military can be difficult as well, more than not letting people know that one is gay. The good thing about the repeal of the law is that someone cannot be kicked out of the armed services based on sexual orientation.
In time of war, gays and straights are equal. Equality is an important milestone for the US military. They should be impartial. As the Malinke of Mali say, “A mother of twins should have impartial breasts.”
