Pope changes position on condom use: When the music changes, so does the dance

In a new book ready to be published, Pope Benedict XVI has changed his position about the use of condoms. The Catholic church historically has been against the use of condoms despite the spread of AIDS.

Even though the Pope thinks that condoms only should be used in certain rare cases, such as male prostitution, it is a big shift and an admission that condoms are the best way to face and limit sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms and abstinence are certainly the best way to stop the spread of the AIDS epidemic.

There is a difference between pragmatism and convictions. The Catholic church must face reality, not put their focus on doctrine. Time have changed and it’s good to see the church change, too. As the Yoruba of Nigeria say, “When the music changes, so does the dance.”
