Republicans win the House, Democrats hold on to the Senate: The monkey and gorilla may claim kinship, but the monkey is a monkey and the gorilla is a gorilla

The American people have spoken.  The Republican party won control of the House of Representatives. The Tea Party won key races in Kentucky and Florida. The Democrats have managed to hold onto control of the Senate. It was a good night for the Republican party. The Democrats must be scratching their heads.

It is the law of democracy: one day you win, another day you lose. Maybe the sharing of power in Congress is a good thing for American lawmakers to push them to work harder and work together. On the other hand, the next two years will be hard for the White House. The party of “No” now has the blessing of the American people to hold the country hostage until the next presidential election.

Both parties will claim to be working for the American people, but the truth is that each political party will have its own agenda. As the Xhosa of South Africa say, “The monkey and gorilla may claim kinship, but the monkey is a monkey and the gorilla is a gorilla.”
