Donations for Pakistan not coming easily: A thief is always under suspicion

The world is watching with indifference at the devastation of floods hitting Pakistan.

Despite the appeal launched by the UN to raise $450 million to help some 14 million Pakistanis affected by the floods, we are not seeing the same enthusiasm among the Americans as we did for Haiti. Pakistan’s reputation for corruption is making Americans and the rest of the world keep their hands in their pockets.

When we think about the billions of dollars spent by the US to help the Pakistani government that has been stolen or ended up supporting the Taliban, it is depressing. People are getting wiser. As the Hawiya of Somalia say, “A thief is always under suspicion.”
