Senator Byrd has died. As usual, when someone of this caliber in American politics dies, it is big news. What we will remember about Senator Byrd is that he was a self-made man, who build his reputation in the Senate fighting hard for West Virginia, one of the poorest states in the United States.
We will remember also that he was a die-hard Southern Democrat in the original sense of the term and an ex-KKK member. Late in his life he was not proud of his association with the terrorist organization.
Byrd had a long life. He saw the ups and downs of America, including the Civil Rights Act against which he voted. As we all know, men change as they get older and closer to death. The change is certainly due to the approach of the “supreme judgment” for those who believe in God.
Whether you liked him or not, Byrd served his country in the way he thought was right. As the Arabs of Egypt say, “The end of life is death.”
