How is it possible that Reverend Fred Phelps, a former civil rights lawyer who fought for Blacks in the 60s, now is the most hated anti-gay preacher in the country? How could he go from one extreme to the other? Was he just a fake to start with? Or did he experience some trauma that changed him forever?
Often, Blacks, Jews, and Gays are mixed in the same bag. If you hate one group, it is likely that you hate another. Maybe in the 60s, homosexuality was not so visible. It is incomprehensible that a “man of God” uses hate as an argument to justify tragedies. We have seen him at funerals of fallen soldiers proclaiming that America has been punished for tolerating homosexuality.
Hate is certainly not what the Bible preaches, even though it has been use as a tool to enslave or colonize people. Any offense to a specific group of people is definitely against God’s words. Maybe Reverend Phelps’ hate will lead him straight to hell. As the Bedouin of Egypt say, “The lawyer’s pouch is a mouth of Hell.”
