The recent anti-immigration law signed by the Governor of Arizona is certainly the toughest ever seen in America. For a country without a national identification card, it is difficult to enforce such a law without being suspected of racial profiling.
It is no secret that the US-Mexico border is a seive. If the US is serious about closing its border, it has the capacity to do so. Clearly, there is no political motivation for Democrats or Republicans to stop illegal immigration. The US needs illegal workers as cheap labor.
Those who support tough laws against illegal immigration are fed up with drug trafficking and crimes. On the other hand, being stopped by police based on appearance is racial profiling. All is new in America. In many countries in Europe, the police have the right to check immigration status.
Does the federal government have the right to overturn this law? Once again, the American congress must step up and fix the problem. If not, the problem will remain. As the Sara of Chad say, “A bad wound deserves strong medicine.”
