President Obama has spoken to the nation about his strategy for winning the war in Afghanistan. He’s sending more troops to Afghanistan despite criticism from his own party and supporters.
The time line for the new mission seems to worry many. Are we having a short memory that this war started eight years ago? So what should he do? For many his decision was too slow to come. Now, he’s sending more troops, but he should not set a withdrawal plan. If the U.S. stays in Afghanistan without a goal and time line, it becomes an occupying force.
His plan is reasonable. We should instead be careful, wait, and see the results months from now. As the Swahili of Tanzania say, “The lion which moves silently is the one that eats meat.”
