He who doesn’t clean his mouth before breakfast always complains that the food is sour.

Things are going badly in Afghanistan. Clearly the US did not have a good strategy to win this war. Eight years after the invasion of this big and mountainous country, the debate in the US should not be focused on how to win this war.

Some generals on the ground during the Bush administration, who are now retired, seem to recognize that they did not have a war strategy. The Vietnam War, which shares some similarities with the Afghan war, certainly did not teach anything to the Americans.

President Bush and his security council members including Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney rushed troops into Afghanistan after 9/11.  Should Americans blame them? It appears that, at that moment, the Bush administration’s approval rate was at its highest level ever. Americans should remember this. As the Massai of Kenya say, “He who doesn’t clean his mouth before breakfast always complains that the food is sour.”
