A man accused of stealing a goat should not entertain his visitors with goat’s meat.

The US government is in a very bad position regarding the Afghan government. The US commitment to president Karzai appears shaky after fraudulent elections. Several European governments are expressing serious concerns about his leadership.

The flow of money from the US is certainly not helping the people of Afghanistan, but rather President Karzai and his entourage. The official results of the Afghan elections have not been released yet, but a couple of weeks ago, President Karzai, speaking to his supporters, claimed victory and denied charges of corruption, saying that the Afghan people have spoken.

The US and its allies are stuck. On the one hand they cannot criticize an ally because they need Karsai. On the other hand, they recognize that the election had a lot of irregularities. Should President Karsai be trusted in this war against the Taliban? Of course not. As the Songhai of Mali say, “A man accused of stealing a goat should not entertain his visitors with goat’s meat.”
