Top Israeli and US officials are meeting to discuss the options on the table to engage Iran regarding its nuclear program. We all know that this matter has been in the news for a while. Both sides are not giving any sign of backing up.

Iran is claiming that its nuclear program is peaceful. The industrialized world doesn’t see it that way. Honestly, how can the West dictate to another what to do when they themselves have nuclear power? It is unfair. But at the same time, seeing what we have witnessed in the past weeks regarding the response of hardliners in Iran over an alleged stolen election, we have to fear if this regime can achieve peaceful nuclear power.

I remember the shock when Pakistan declared itself a nuclear power. I remember how nervous governments around the world were over nuclear weapons in the hands of Muslim extremists. My fear is to wake up one day with the news that Iran is a nuclear power. What frightening news for its neighbors! What frightening news for world peace!

Israel is considering all measures if diplomatic efforts fail. Going it alone instead of with a coalition of countries would be a mistake. For sure, time is running out. Words alone will not solve this serious threat. Actions matter before it’s too late. As the Yoruba of Nigeria say, “Many words do not fill a basket.”
