A recent Gallup poll showed where the GOP has lost the most ground over the past eight years. According to the survey, 9% of moderates and 8% of liberals left the party. Meanwhile, only 1% of those who describe themselves as conservatives have left the GOP over the last eight years.
Definitely, the GOP has a problem. While so-called liberal or moderate Republicans include those who are pro-choice or pro-gay, they are the minority within the party. Many of them share similar values as the hardcore conservatives but feel frustrated that their party is shifting more and more to the right.
I don’t believe that the GOP is going to end. But, to keep their youth members, they need to modernize. Instead of listening to Rush Limbaugh, listen more to the new generation such as Meghan McCain. The future belongs to the youth, not to Dick Cheney and other old ideologues. If the GOP refuses to change, more of its member will become not Democrats but Independents. As the Indians of South Africa say, “A house without children is a graveyard.”
