President Obama unveiled his strategy for the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The United States indicates that elements of Pakistan’s military intelligence are providing support to Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants. Honestly, it’s not a surprise when you think about the amount of money that the Bush administration gave to the Musharaf regime in the name of the war on terror — the results of which are not to be seen. Many observers knew that the war on terror was a way for Pakistan to get money from the US. Think this way: they cannot fight their own terrorists in their own territory. How can they win the war over their border?
Definitely, the failure of Pakistan’s government affects the peace and reconstruction of their neighbor Afghanistan. Time to time, I am troubled about how naive the Bush administration was. By pumping billions of dollars into a regime that is corrupt means the longer the war on terror will last. Hopefully, the Obama administration will learn from the Bush administration’s mistakes and hold the Pakistani government accountable. Pakistan must show that they are capable to win, not pretend that they are winning a war that they are losing in reality. As the Oromo of Ethiopia say, “There is no cure for him who hides an illness.”
