There is no question that the Obama administration’s next foreign crisis will be the Mexican war against drug cartels. Mexico, like any other country, is dealing with recession as well. The general opinion in the US is that the violence in Mexico will spill over the border. This is certainly not good news for the Obama administration, which has already two wars and an economic recession on its plate.
Almost all the US administrations have neglected the predictions of the problem by many governors of states bordering Mexico. The US-Mexican border is as secure as a sieve for those who come in and for those who go out. If Mexico was a Muslim country, the US would take the problem seriously. But since foreign workers from Mexico are in such high demand, the various administrations have closed their eyes for many years.
Now that things are really bad and the level of violence very high, Mexico is pointing fingers at the US as not only the big consumer of drugs, but also a source of deadly weapons. Of course the US points out Mexican corruption as the source of problems. Mexico has their own responsibility to share. But the US must admit that for many years they have been playing with fire to the point of putting their national security on the line. As the Bedouin of Egypt say, “Lock your door rather than accuse your neighbor.”
