America is outraged about the AIG executive bonuses. The people’s reaction is understandable. When I think back about those who were against the bailout, I couldn’t understand–as a foreigner–why the opposition. But, now I see it. This type of behavior is basically an insult to someone who is rescuing you. It is difficult to comprehend. Many executives are still living under stones. They seem not to realize that their practices are being watched carefully, especially when they are getting money from tax payers.
If this is the way AIG thanks the American people, their ingratitude is extraordinary. Even though AIG believes that it is totally legal to reward their executives, it is morally wrong. Unfortunately, as the Massai of Kenya say, “A donkey always says thank you with a kick.”
