When you go to a donkey’s house, don’t talk about ears.

Madam Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the eyes and ears of President Obama in her foreign trips. During her visit in China last month, she took a soft tone on Chinese political and religious freedoms. She was under intense criticism from human rights groups such as Amnesty international for not openly criticizing the Chinese government’s human rights record.

Her attitude is certainly understandable. Not only is the U.S. one of the largest buyers of Chinese exports, but China is the world’s largest holder of U.S. government debt. So in this bad economic time, it is not a good idea to touch sensitive topics. The United States and China need each other. As the Fulbe of Benin say, “When you go to a donkey’s house, don’t talk about ears.”
