The Republican governors are getting all the attention in the press. They are divided between the moderate Republicans such as Arnold Schwarzenegger of California or Charlie Crist of Florida, who are in favor of the stimulus help, and a group of Southern Governors opposed to the stimulus help, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour.

Those who oppose the stimulus help are a group of contenders for the Presidential election of 2012. Their attitude is well-calculated. Each state is different. Each state doesn’t have the same unemployment rate or deficit. That’s true. What surprises me is the contenders’ ability to put their personal ambitions first, before the urgency of serving their own people. Definitely they are going to war against creating jobs and are condemning more workers to unemployment benefits. Maybe my thoughts about politicians were wrong. I thought that people run for office to serve people first. The division within the GOP will tear their party apart. I guess, as the Hausa of Niger say, “Children of the same mother do not always agree.”
