It is indisputable that America is changing. The South is changing too. Who could believe that a Black man with a funny name could win the states of North Carolina or Virginia — both known for being conservative strongholds. I believe that the change in the South is primarily due to the transplants from the North. Are the Southern people really changing?
This morning I was driving and saw a car with a sticker of President Obama and a sticker of the Confederate flag. For those who are not from the South, this flag is very controversial. Depending from which side you are, this flag symbolizes Southern heritage or slavery.
I am not sure if the Southern mind has changed. For sure, less than 45 years ago, the South was hell for people of color. I am not sure, 45 years later, the mind can change so radically. It is certainly difficult to believe. Southerners have a split personality right now. This picture is contradictory. As the Bambara of Mali say, ” No matter how much the world changes, dogs will never lay eggs.”
