Michael Phelps is back in the news, not as hero, but for being photographed smoking marijuana at a party.

As usual, the press knows how to invent stars and knows as well how to destroy them. Occidental society expects perfection from athletes or any kind of celebrity, putting them under constant pressure. Michael Phelps still a young man who is growing and, like any young man of his age, he will make mistakes and learn from it. I remember the brouhaha last year when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The media should back off and let the young man become an adult. In spite of his achievements, Michael has been so humble and down to earth. He always acted as a normal young man. Once again the media looks for big news.

As the Fang of Gabon say, “If you love a dog, you must love its fleas.”
