Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson, an openly gay man, will be praying for Obama on Sunday at an inaugural event. I remember weeks ago when the Obama transition team announced the choice of the evangelical pastor Rick Warren, an anti-gay man, to deliver the main invocation. That choice was seen as a slap in the face for many of his supporters, especially gays.
The ability of the new administration to bring everyone in the same boat is quite interesting. One day the liberals are satisfied, the next day the conservatives are satisfied. It is difficult to tell if the new administration is biased. The diverse choice of ministers is a precursor to what the administration is going to look like. Rick Warren and Gene Robinson will neutralize the critics. As the Fon of Benin say, “When a mosquito flies, it is impossible to tell if it is a male or a female.”
