Israeli tanks and infantry rolled into Gaza after nightfall Saturday, launching a ground offensive in a widening war against Hamas. The number of casualties keep increasing and they will continue to increase because Gaza is densely populated. Eight days of fighting so far have left more than 460 Palestinians dead; four Israelis were killed by rocket fire.

Rallies are being held in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens, and several Asian cities, following similar events in parts of the Muslim world on Friday. The pictures of hundreds of wounded people, including women, children and elderly, lying in hospital are sad. War is certainly not the answer for this difficult situation.

Should we blame Israel for protecting it people by removing Hamas’ treat? A political solution is the answer. Unfortunately, as the Bedouin of Egypt say, “War is a disaster for winner and loser alike.”
