American top cop Michael Chertoff hired a company that used illegal immigrants to clean his home for about three years. The Homeland Security Secretary didn’t know it, apparently. But let’s face the reality: before Chertoff was nominated to be homeland security secretary, President George W. Bush selected former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik for the job. Kerik withdrew his name after acknowledging he had not paid all taxes for a family nanny-housekeeper and that the woman may have been in the country illegally. This story showed clearly that everyone — even a top Secretary or a simple citizen — faces the same reality. Michael Chertoff is not immune. As the Bambara of Mali say,”Better to be known as a sinner than a hypocrite.”
