Today, I watched shoppers pass a dying man, crushed by other shoppers, on their way to buy, buy, buy. They couldn’t even stop to help him. It has been revolting to see the nasty side of Black Friday. Wal-Mart lost an employee by stampede, two people lost their lives in a shooting at a Toys R Us, and a pregnant woman was hospitalized and could have lost her baby for trying to be the first to get in the store.
In other cultures, people buy when they need something. In America, and now some other Western cultures, people buy to have more. Just more.
Greedy materialism is a nasty characteristic. Even though the economy is bad and the future uncertain, people underestimate the gravity of the situation and continue to shop. How can someone who is already financially in trouble continue to dig deeper into the hole even though he knows that it is going to make things worse?
As the Indians of South Africa say, “You can’t pay your debt with the money that you dream about.”
