What a week in politics! America just shifted from the financial crisis to McCain supporters’ attacks against his political opponents. I feel like Senator McCain is trapped in his own game: what he believed to be the best way to slow down the rising of his political opponent in the polls. Although, I have to give credit to John McCain for “stepping up” against the negativity of his supporters. Unfortunately, it was too late. The damage was already done. Americans are smarter now. What worked for George Bush won’t work for McCain.
Using race and xenophobia is like playing with fire. John McCain and Sarah Palin should know better — fire burns. Their tactics of fear and intolerance reinforced the ignorance of their own supporters. The woman who made a statement to John McCain about Obama not being an American is one of millions of Americans fed by the “rumor” that he is not. Don’t they know that a foreigner cannot run for President of the United States?
Here’s what I mean (she’s the second audience member to speak):
By taking boos from his supporters for defending his opponent as “a decent person and a person that they do not have to be scared of as President,” John McCain chose to stand for the truth. As the Chewa of Malawi say, “Someone who wishes for rain, must accept mud.”
